In 1979 Doubleday published the autobiography of American jazz trumpeter Gillespie (1917-93), which he wrote with the help of his longtime friend and erstwhile professor of African American studies Al Fraser. His story casts light not only into the golden era of American jazz, but also into the lives of African Americans during the middle part of the 20th century, as well of course on his own life and music.
