Cleveland (education, Richard Stockton College of New Jersey) presents 21 chapters highlighting the experiences of African American, Latino/a, gay/lesbian, persons with disabilities, and bi/multi-racial doctoral students pursuing Ph.D.s and junior faculty members across the U.S. who have successfully navigated the academy to secure employment, tenure, and promotion despite the existing obstacles that cause many to avoid or leave higher education altogether. The 32 authors include minority faculty, researchers, and current and past doctoral students who provide insights and offer suggestions from their experiences as graduate students and/or junior and senior faculty, as well as White contributors who support the advancement of diversity and affirmative action. The text offers current and potential minority graduate students and faculty pursuing employment, studying and working at predominantly White institutions concrete strategies for successfully completing graduate school and pursuing a career in higher education.
