Hoping to stimulate comparative studies in the archaeology of islands, Fitzpatrick (anthropology, North Carolina State U.) presents 14 papers, most of which were originally presented at a 2002 Society for American Archaeology symposium entitled "The Archaeology of Insularity: Examining the Past in Island Environments." The broad themes of the proceedings are humans and their island environments; island interregional interaction; methodological, theoretical, and historical approaches to island archaeology; and the study of islands and island societies.
