They explain how experimental mathematics differs from other disciplines and, in a series of chapters that build from the basics and include a range of exercises, explain important functions such as the evaluation of problems, setting up the experimental process and evaluating the result, learning from success and failure, making the best use of current tools and techniques, and accepting that sometimes the secret to experimental mathematics is serendipity. They include hints and solutions for exercises and a helpful list of further reading. The result goes beyond mere recreational mathematics but at the same time is not intimidating.
