The journalistic community often feels that TV news anchors undermine journalistic values. Meltzer (the Graduate Program in Communication, Culture and Technology, Georgetown University) explores the impact that television has had on what is valued in journalism, how one becomes a journalist, who is counted as a journalist, and who is believed as a journalist. She focuses on three elements of the TV anchor's job: appearance, personality, and emotion. Meltzer analyzes written material from the popular and trade press, scholarly literature, memoirs, and network archives, as well as broadcasts from the 1950s onward and personal interviews, to uncover the codes of behavior of the journalistic community.
