Largely approaching the topic from a political ecology perspective, the ten papers presented here by Baver (political science and Latin American/Latino studies, City U. of New York) and Lynch (urban and regional studies, Cornell U.) examine the development and environmental challenges facing the Caribbean region. After an overview of governmental and NGO environmental activities in the region, case studies examine the impact of tourism in Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Martinique. Focus then turns to industrial, agricultural, and military impacts of the environments of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The volume concludes with essays on the connections between environmental movements in the islands and those coming from the Caribbean diaspora in New York City.
