Adopting the same approach as other volumes in the series, she begins with a brief biographical chapter, followed by a discussion of Steinbeck's influence and influences. Separate chapters are, with the exception of one devoted to short stories, given over to critical examinations of his major novels, with each containing discussions on plot development, character development, and major themes.
