In this memoir, the author describes his experiences as a Polish Jew swept up in the terror of Nazi occupation and the Holocaust. The first half of the book looks at larger issues of the community, describing and condemning Jewish cooperation with the occupation. Recounting events after his arrest by the Gestapo he naturally begins to focus more on his own personal fate, including his eventual escape in the closing days of the war.
