This book is an outgrowth of co-author Johnson's book, Using Data to Close the Achievement Gap (2002). Here, Johnson joins with Avelar La Salle, co-founder of a firm dedicated to improving schools that serve high-poverty, high-minority communities. The authors examine academic equity issues among ethnic and language minorities and low-income students, focusing on different types of performance indicators beyond those required by No Child Left Behind. These "other" data, such as measures of instructional rigor, analysis of retention and achievement, and longitudinal data by individuals and cohort groups, offer a more complete picture of the relationship of academics and equity. The types of data are illustrated with actual school and student cases highlighting commonly misinterpreted data. The authors conclude by recommending strategies and policies for changing academic inequities. The book includes exercises and activities and an annotated list of resources.
