In the first book-length study of the fiction and non-fiction of Mann (1906-49) to explore the relationship between his development as an anti-fascist writer and as one of the first openly gay German writers, Keller contrasts early 20th century psychoanalytic conceptions of identity with contemporary queer theory. Mann's sexual orientation was overshadowed by postwar West Germany's politically-motivated censorship of his novel, Mephisto: Roman einer Karriere (1936). Lacks a subject index.
