Rhodes (mass communication and journalism, the University of Georgia) defines the ethnic press in America and places it within the context of immigration history and the evolution of the functions of the ethnic press, from acculturation to assimilation to cultural pluralism. In part 1, she identifies social problems that affected ethnic presses and looks at immigration laws affecting ethnic populations. There is also discussion of the socialist and anarchist presses and trade union publications. Part 2 focuses on the missions and motivations of the presses in four categories: sojourner (immigrants who eventually wanted to return to their home country), religious, political, and literary press.
