Both positive and negative responses to his 2002 book The Deuteronomic School: History, Social Setting, and Literature called for a response, says Person (religion, Ohio Northern U.). In particular, his later dating of the Deuteronomic History meant he needed to explain the book's relationship with other Old Testament books, particularly the Book of Chronicles. He takes up that task here, covering the linguistic differences between the two books, the scribes of ancient Israel in their oral world, multiformity in the two books, and multiformity and the synoptic and non-synoptic passages. The books are Persian-period historiographies produced by competing scribal guilds, he concludes, but both are based on the same broader traditions, including common exilic source.
