One of the earliest Low Country authors to write in the vernacular, Hadewijch (1210-60) pioneered a Middle Dutch variant of three genres that had only been expressed in Latin before: religious letter, vision, and religious poem. Mommaers and Dutton, who are not further identified, discuss the ideas in her writing, which is now available in English.
