Assuming only an elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics, this text explores methods for performing calculations and making predictions of complex phenomena that occur in solids and quantum liquids. Emphasis is on reaching results by direct and intuitive methods and avoiding mathematical complexity. Readers are lead from an introduction to quasiparticles and collective excitations through advanced concepts of skyrmions and composite fermions. The text is aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students in physics, materials science, and electrical engineering. Chapter problems are included.
