The compilation of Icelandic laws--the title translates as Grey Goose, for some reason no one can or will explain--was committed to writing in 1117-1118, and survives in two 13th-century manuscripts. A team of medievalists has translated the difficult text and provided extensive footnotes explaining passages or referring to other sections or notes for comparison. The sections address Christianity, assembly procedure, homicide, wergild, the lawspeaker, and the law council. Excerpts from other sources on the same matters are appended, as well as an English-Icelandic and an Icelandic glossary. There is no index. Distributed in the US by Michigan State University Press.
