Pool, an occupational therapist specializing in leadership and workforce development in dementia care in the UK, presents the Pool Activity Level Instrument (PAL), a framework for carers in home and formal care settings to provide activity-based care for people with cognitive impairments (including dementia) and engage them in meaningful occupation. The PAL is presented first, followed by discussion of its theoretical background, the four activity levels, reliability and validity, and planning and implementing interventions, with four activity packs for games and creative and sensory activities. This edition adds a new chapter on using the PAL checklist to conduct sensory interventions, and presents the checklist and profile in a new format. It has plans to help match the users' abilities to activities and incorporates current research on uses in various settings, new case studies, and a new online tool.
