The Joint Investigation Team is one of the recent instruments intended to facilitate judicial cooperation within the European Union and has to date only been initiated in a aborted project intended to fight human trafficking from and through Bulgaria and an operational project involving the Netherlands and the United Kingdom in drugs cases. In this volume, Rijken (Tilburg U., the Netherlands) and Vermeulen (director, Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy, Ghent U., Belgium) present the work of research team that had been invited to monitor and analyze both of these projects. The papers address law enforcement information exchange in preoperational and operational phases, aspects of mutual legal assistance in the judicial realm, the role of Europol and Eurojust in Joint Investigation Teams, and sociological aspects regarding the set up and management of a Joint Investigation Team.
