Leahy (theology, St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland), Ryan (history, St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland) and seventy contributors have compiled eighty essays in response to the letter from Pope Benedict XVI to the Catholics in Ireland on March 19, 2010. This letter highlighted how "ideals of holiness charity and wisdom" have helped to consolidate the spiritual identity of Europe. His hope was that a contemporary reflection of past generations of Irish people might "provide the impetus for honest self-examination and a committed programme of ecclesial and individual renewal". Furthermore, inspired by the theme of the 2012 International Eucharistic Congress--Communion with Christ and with one another, this book, full of scholarly essays, is a small piece of the mosaic of Irish Christianity.
