Drawing on 20-plus years of their own family experiences after adopting two African-American boys, Fine (communications, Simmons College) and Johnson (English, Clark University) present The Interracial Adoption Option as a practical guide for research and to support decision-making, and dealing with issues that will arise in multiracial families in the US. They discuss social and cultural issues vis-?-vis the topic of race and provide practical advice about talking to others regarding adoption, deciding where to live, and communicating with school teachers. They particularly want to call attention to the complex nature of race and how it affects adoption, and their emphasis is on white people adopting an African-American child. There are six chapters: making the decision to adopt a child of another race; talking about race and adoption; helping your child develop a healthy racial identity; talking about race and adoption with your child; navigating school; and creating a support system for you and your child.
