From the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council's Committee on Child Maltreatment Research, Policy, and Practice for the Next Decade: Phase II, this volume details the results of a study to support future child abuse and neglect research. The study was conducted at the request of the Administration on Children, Youth and Families of the US Department of Health and Human Services to update the research in the 1993 National Research Council Report Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect; review the literature and findings from research on child abuse and neglect; identify research that provides knowledge relevant to the programmatic, research, and policy fields; recommend research priorities for funding; and identify areas that are no longer a priority. It details aspects of child abuse and neglect, including the extent of the problem, its causes and consequences, the child welfare system, responding to formal reports of child abuse and neglect, the implementation and impacts of prevention and treatment programs, the infrastructure for research, and relevant public policies, ending with recommendations.
