Noting the dearth of scholarship in English on the dances, Chusid analyzes the many types of dances by composer Franz Schubert, discussing them by genre: the minuets for winds, piano, and string quartet; the ecossaises; the early German dances and ländler; published waltzes, ländler, and German dances; the polonaises and dances for piano duet; and the dances published after his death. After surveying dance culture during the nineteenth century and Schubert's circle of friends who enjoyed dancing, he examines each dance type and individual pieces for their structure, features, and musical style, including the use of chromaticism and multiple keys; whether Schubert differentiated between the German dance and the ländler; and the influence of Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms.
