The late Miller, a clinical psychologist, and Smith, who has autism and worked with Miller, offer 101 tips for use with children with autism based on Miller's method, which focuses on the idea that children demonstrate their full understanding in different contexts before moving on to a new task; uses autistic children's obsessions as a strength to build resilience and communication; and emphasizes re-engaging the misbehaving child, using movement and action and repetitive routines, and teaching children to generalize their functioning appropriately, shift from one location to another, and use transitions to acquire symbolic capacity.
