Herbst and Davies offer this book for high school teachers on understanding and implementing valid, reliable, standards-based assessment efficiently, presented in three chapters. The first chapter treats preparation of the classroom, and preparing students for what will be expected of them. The second chapter discusses ways of engaging students in learning by connecting the learning process to assessment goals, communicating about different ways that competency can be demonstrated, and adjusting teaching to address any issues reflected in midterm assessments. The third chapter covers how to compile final evaluations and report back to students and other bodies, with particular attention to organizing incentives so that students neither give up if they fall behind nor fail to take class seriously. Examples, lists, and "what about" textboxes illustrate concrete approaches and address common concerns.
