This new book responds to the need for a textbook on surgical infections that is up-to-date on recent developments in the rapid increase of antibiotic resistance and the appearance of multi-drug-resistant strains of pathogens. The chapters include review of in vitro studies on the principles of prevention of surgical infections, as well as clinical studies on their management. Many types of infection are covered, including anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery, complications of dialysis access, infective endocarditis, necrotizing soft tissue infections, diabetic foot infections, and others. Alternative methods of treatment such as plant extracts, essential oils, and zootherapeutics are discussed in several chapters. Once chapter deals with invasive mycoses in surgical patients; the rest consider bacterial infection. Chapters cover intrabdominal, cardiovascular, skin and soft tissue, and skeletal infections.
