Citing the need for a change in grading and reporting students’ progress concomitant with the change from an industrial society to a continually evolving information society that demands flexibility, creativity, and initiative, Guskey presents the three essential steps for successful change: clarify the purpose of grading and reporting; align all classroom and school policies and practices with the stated purpose; ensure proposed changes are supported by strong research evidence. Aware that change from the traditional grading conventions may spark controversy and debate, he argues that the current practices do not fully report students’ academic performance.
