Written by a British aeronautical engineer and author of books on aircraft, this is an encyclopedia of light airplanes, old and new. More than 800 types of airplane are illustrated with color photographs of current examples, in flight or on the airfield. The date of the photograph is usually given. Each model is given a short text that explains how it relates to other models by the same manufacturer; it gives variants and their numbers. For light aircraft currently in use, the number of planes on the US and UK civil flight registers as of 2014 may be given. The book is organized alphabetically by manufacturer. Rather than being a complete encyclopedia of all light aircraft commercially produced, this book is designed to identify what readers may see at a civilian airfield or air show. It includes mass production models from many nations, small companies, homebuilt kit aircraft models, and older light planes that have been restored to flying condition.
