Dika (American cinema, U. of California at Los Angeles and U. of Southern California) explores how the reuse of past images and genres in later works of film and art are used in oppositional ways. Analyzing such films as Badlands, The Shootist, The Last Waltz, American Graffiti, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, among others, she investigates the use of replication and opposition and attempts to foreground their operational systems. Along the way she examines such issues as the destabilization of the past in the service of the present, historical trauma, the tension between representation and the real, and the returned image as a barrier and a form of retrenchment in popular film.
