The editors (professors of sociology at Emory U.) present a reader on globalization that is diverse in disciplinary, political, and topical perspective. They include 60 papers addressing the overarching debates about globalization, the causes and effects of economic globalization, political globalization and the nation-state, the reorganization and impact of civil society, media and cultural globalization, the changing role of religion under globalization, environmentalism and the globalization of social problems, and resistance to globalization. Each section includes an introductory essay by the editors. The orthodoxy of the Washington Consensus is represented in the reader's pages, but so are dissenting views from such figures as world-systems theorist Immanuel Wallerstein, Zapatista spokesmen Subcommandante Marcos, and Indian environmental activist Vandana Shiva.
