Hendrickx, who works with people with Asperger Syndrome (AS), and Newton, a scientist who has AS, offer insight into the ups and downs of a relationship in which one partner has AS. Their personal account is told in alternating first-person selections, which have the flavor of well-edited transcripts from taped conversations. The first-person narratives are supplemented by professional knowledge and anecdotes gained from Hendrickx's work with adults with AS, a career which she began as a result of her relationship with Newton.
