Rimland (former director of the Autism Research Institute and founder of the Autism Society of America) presents data and case studies in order to argue that most children labeled "hyperactive," "attention-disordered," "oppositional," "depressed," "bipolar," etc. are in fact the victims of toxic physical environments, often coupled with genetic variability. He also argues that many of these children can be simply treated "without either futile parent-blaming psychotherapeutic approaches or the use of harmful mind-altering drugs such as Ritalin or antidepressants," but instead with dietary, toxin-removing, and other biological approaches combined with behavior modification and cognitive behavioral therapy.
