When he died suddenly in February 2006 McHugh (theology, U. of Durham and member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission) had largely completed this first volume of his planned commentary on the whole book of John for the series. The introduction survives only in scattered notes, says Stanton (emeritus divinity, U. of Cambridge), so readers must reconstruct his theory and approach from the commentary itself, but his initial divisions of text are intriguing. Among the topics are the word of God in creation and history, the logos in the prologue, the calling and testimony of the first disciples, a possible literary source for John 2.1-11, John the Baptist and his followers, and Shechem and Samaria in New Testament times.
