Perhaps the greatest garden designer of the twentieth century, Russell Page (1906-85) was trained as an artist, and brought an architectural sensibility and a keen eye for style to the many vast garden projects that he undertook. His gardening education began in the grand manner at Longleat in England in the 1930s and culminated in the United States in the 1980s with the 140-acre PepsiCo sculpture park in Purchase, New York. In the years between he designed gardens all over England, the United States and continental Europe - prominent among them the Battersea Park Festival Gardens for the 1951 Festival of Britain, the gardens of La Mortella, on the volcanic island of Ischia, for Sir William and Lady Walton, and the gardens of the Frick Collection in New York City.<BR>For this book, first published in 1991, Gabrielle van Zuylen and Marina Schinz researched and photographed all Russell Page's best work, both early and late. With the assistance and co-operation of Page's clients, and using her intensive research into his private files and unpublished writing, Gabrielle van Zuylen has brought the man and his work into sharp focus.
