In hopes of inspiring people interested in starting their own companies, Livingstone (founding partner of a seed-stage venture firm, Cambridge, Massachusetts) interviews the founders (pictured) of innovative companies that became successful in the electronic technology sector: e.g., Apple Computer, craigslist, PayPal, Yahoo!, and TiVo. They tell stories of how they turned their innovative new ideas into successful businesses and of how perseverance in the face of rejection often leads to innovation. The interviews focus on the early stages of these startups and the uncertainties the founders often faced and show that pure determination may be the most important quality for the creative entrepreneur to possess. She notes that while startups often function counter to established ideas of what is "businesslike" they tend to be extremely productive and she suggests that the corporate world might improve productivity by focusing more on creativity and less on appearances.
