French philosopher Ravaisson (1813-1900) contributed to the philosophical treatment of habit, which goes back at least as far as Aristotle, in his 1838 De l'habitude, which in turn influenced later thinkers such as Heidegger, Sartre, and Lévinas. Philosophy scholars Carlisle (U. of Liverpool) and Sinclair (Manchester Metropolitan U.) present an edition of the treatise in French with facing pages of English translation.
