Written for practicing leaders, this work discusses the nature of motivation and individual needs and how they relate to the key tasks facing leaders. Part I overviews theoretical background on leadership and motivation. The author describes his action-centered leadership framework, and puts forward his own theory of motivation, in which half of a person's motivation comes from within and half from without. In Part II, he explains key concepts of Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory and applies them to industry; material in this section is based on the author's thesis submitted to Oxford University for a higher research degree. Part III describes the author's eight principles for motivating others. The book was first published in Great Britain in 1990 by the Talbot Adair Press as Understanding Motivation. This edition was previously published in Great Britain and the US by Kogan Page Ltd. in 2006 as Leadership and Motivation. This is the first paperback edition.
