On one hand, Scruton (American Enterprise Institute) castigates religious and medical fanatics who would deprive others of the pleasure of wine; on the other he sneers at elite poseurs who would make wine into an ethereal phenomenon beyond the conception of the unwashed masses. He begins with the first element of his formula, "I drink," explaining his fall, le tour de France, and news from elsewhere. Then he proceeds to the therefore part, with chapters on conscious and being, the meaning of wine, the meaning of whine, and being and binging.
