The late Karas analyzes the compositions, performances, musicians, and musical life at the "model" camp at Theresienstadt (Terezín) in Czechoslovakia during the Holocaust. Drawing from scores, programs, other documents, and interviews, he includes discussion of the concentration camp's choral activities, operas, chamber music and recitals, orchestras, cabaret productions, and composers such as Hans Krása, Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein, and Pavel Haas. He also describes the Terezín Family Camp in Auschwitz. Facsimiles of programs, scores, and other documents are incorporated.
