In this biography of the last wife of Henry VIII historian Norton delves into the history of the Parr family, of whom Catherine may have been the most stable member. She follows the future queen through two arranged marriages that reflect the political uncertainties of the Tudor period. In Norton's view, Catherine was accomplished at compromise, something she needed at Henry's court. She also was experienced in the care and nurture of step-children and the future Queen Elizabeth may have found her the closest thing to a mother she would ever have. While the intrigue is emphasized, Catherine's intense Protestant beliefs are mentioned as well. Her teaching of the future rulers may well have also influenced the course of English religion, something that has not been previously touched on in popular representations.
