Author Bowen was drafted into the 401st Glider Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division. He was wounded during the Normandy campaign, then continued fighting in Holland and the Ardennes, where he was captured and held prisoner. He began writing this memoir in 1945-46 while at Walter Reed Medical Center recovering from his wounds; he later added more details. The memoir, one of the few accounts by a member of the Glider Infantry, contains realistic details of the horror of D-Day and the despair of captivity. B&w historical photos are included.
