Russ (environmental technology, College of Southern Maryland) is a landscape architect, so he began this study talking about site design and landscape restoration processes. As the work progressed, however, he realized that the principles he was discovering applied to design processes in any design profession. He is fundamentally concerned here with the ethical obligation that sustainability will create for the designer, and seeks to instigate or further dialogue about that among design professionals. Among his topics are why Prometheus suffers, whether there is an ethical obligation to act sustainably, the choice for sustainability, and the precautionary principle and design.
