Twenty case studies are presented here by Levine (Center for Global Development) and the What Works Working Group, illustrating successes in public health nationally, regionally, and globally. The volume is an updated edition of the casebook published in 2004, which contained 17 cases presented under the auspices of the Center for Global Development's Global Health Policy Research network and by an international group of researchers in international health, development economics, public policy, and other fields, who collaborated with the Disease Control Priorities Project of the National Institutes of Health and the world's leading health authorities. Cases were chosen if they lasted five years or more, were large-scale, employed a cost-effective intervention, and had a major impact on an important health problem. They were implemented in Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Poland, and addressed problems such as tuberculosis, HIV and STD prevention, polio, the health of the poor, fertility, tobacco use, and cataracts, for example. The current volume has three additional cases, revised data, and supplementary information. The book is intended for public health students.
