As they spoke to a group of students at the American University in Cairo, the 13 refugees went beyond the conventional image of them as victims, discussing such matters as the government, non-state actors, civil society, marriage, religious strife, and family values. They are linked to each other by dislocation, nationality, and history, but vary in economic and professional status, religion, age, gender, and when they fled the 20-year conflict in Sudan.
