Safer (psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Stanford U.), Telch (a psychology counselor in private practice), and Chen (psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences, U. of Chicago) describe an adapted form of dialectical behavioral therapy--originally developed by Marsha Linehan in 1993 for individuals engaging in recurrent suicidal behavior who meet criteria for borderline personality disorder--that has been modified for treatment of clients with binge-eating disorder and/or symptoms of bulimia nervosa. The modification combines elements of the functions of two distinct modalities in standard dialectical behavioral therapy: individual psychotherapy (enhancement of motivation) and group skills training (acquisition/strengthening of new skills). It also includes three of the four skills training modules of the standard program: mindfulness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance (omitting interpersonal effectiveness).
