It is fitting that Conolly (English, Trent University, Canada) begins this round-by-round story of George Bernard Shaw versus the BBC with Shaw establishing the rules for royalties on radio productions of his plays. For Shaw, intellectual property was as solid as real estate. He also soon realized the immense possibilities of radio and, later, television to reach millions who might never go to a theater. The BBC soon realized that Mr. Shaw provided good entertainment, both through his plays and his opinionated and often outrageous broadcast essays. This chronicle of thirty years of confrontational collaboration is highly entertaining. The text of some of Shaw's broadcasts is given in an appendix as well as several obituaries of Shaw and excerpts from German quotations of Shaw for war-time propaganda.
