Alden, a retired Navy commander who writes about naval history, and McDonald (information and data services, Indiana U., Bloomington) compile a comprehensive chronological listing of all successful US and Allied submarine attacks on Japanese shipping in the Pacific and Indian oceans during World War II, including a few in the Atlantic, those by British and Dutch submarines, Soviet submarine attacks in the Pacific in August 1945, and casualties caused by mines. For each entry, information includes patrol number, commanding officer, date and time, position, target, type of attack, and result, as well as data as reported from the Japanese perspective. This edition has been revised and expanded to incorporate material from Allied ULTRA signals intelligence agencies and recent Japanese language publications.
