The first volume, published in 2005, profiled 20th-century medievalists who contributed to history beyond the Middle Ages, and to the international intellectual milieu more broadly. That anthology having been received kindly, the editors here provide the same service to 18 medievalists who are less known worldwide but who contributed significantly to the establishment of medieval or national identities in their own country or literary tradition. English readers would likely be most familiar with C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, and perhaps with Johan Huizinga, who is Dutch but widely read in English translation.
