Forensic anthropology is a popular subject in fiction, film and television series. In this second edition of her introduction to the field, anthropologist Nafte explains the background and procedures involved in the identification of bodies, especially skeletal remains, as well as determining the cause of death. She gives a review of the bones in a human body, showing how they compare to animal bones. She also shows sex and race differences at the skeletal level. The recognition of different wounds is summarized (although the hammer stuck in the skull is rather obvious). Nafte also demonstrates how faces are reconstructed along with other methods of identifying remains. The role of forensic anthropology in cases of mass murders, genocides and other human rights violations concludes the book. This work is intended to inform those in peripheral occupations, such as police officers, or to enlighten those curious about the reality behind the fiction. Many of the photos are graphic. While specific case studies are not given, Nafte wants the reader to remember that all the pieces of bone and flesh were once people.
