The Concise Encyclopedia of The Properties of Materials Surfaces and Interfaces draws together in a single volume a range of articles from the periodically updated internet version of the Encyclopedia of Materials Science and Technology (EMSAT). The structure and thermodynamics of solid surfaces are covered, including their reactivity and catalytic role, as well as their tribological features such as friction, lubrication, adhesion and wear. The importance of surface coatings and surface films upon material properties is reviewed, and a range of articles on the production and characterisation of thin films is also included.<BR>The importance of internal interfaces is recognised, as in the case of grain boundaries in crystalline materials, or inter-phase boundaries. Their structure, their chemistry and their cohesion are all reviewed. Approximately 100 articles have been selected which discuss the above features in a range of materials, i.e. metallic, ceramic and polymeric. Reviews of the surface properties of wood and paper are also included.<BR>Magnetic and superconducting materials have deliberately been excluded as a Concise Encyclopedia embracing this field of materials already exists. The encyclopedia provides engineers, materials scientists, consultants and students with an up-to-date resource that enables understanding of the surface/interface properties of a wide range of materials of engineering importance.
