Bergann (Purdue U.) presents a textbook for a course teaching college students skills they need to produce effective researched writing in a variety of genres. She also suggests some of the purposes of research in colleges and universities and encourages students to identify themselves as novice members of the larger research community. Her topics are essential concepts of argument in academic writing; reading, evaluating, and responding to arguments; understanding plagiarism and using academic sources responsibly; moving from inquiry to argument; using the library and its databases effectively; using sources effectively; revising and editing to meet audience expectations; adapting writing for professional audiences; writing a personal research narrative; and writing an argumentative research paper.
