Douglas M. Considine took over editing the VNSE in 1976; his son now fulfills that duty. Previous editions have been included in Guide to Reference Books, Walford's Guide to Reference Material (in the UK), Public Library Catalog, Senior High School Library Catalog, Books for College Libraries and its successor, Resources for College Libraries. The ninth edition was published in 2002, with 3,900 pages; here the page count has risen to 6,200--a 33% increase. At seven pounds per volume it seems time to increase the number of volumes from three to, possibly, six. VNSE 10 contains 10,000 entries (one-quarter new), 9,500 cross references, 4,800 diagrams, graphs and photos (b&w only; some of indifferent quality), 600 tables, and an index of 100 pages. Entries run from one line to many pages and contain extensive bibliographies, which often include Web references to authoritative sites. Virtually all libraries need to acquire VNSE10.
